Hockey newcomers feel the ‘Rush’

MILTON Keynes Hockey Club hosted its first Rush Hockey taster session at Woughton on the Green last Thursday.

Volunteers from the club are hoping to entice a whole new generation of player to the game, with the introduction of the new format of the game.

Designed by England Hockey, it’s hoped that the bigger ball, smaller pitch, smaller goals, shorter game times and simplified rules will help recruit new people to the sport.

Targeted at the over 16s, from those who have yet to pick up a stick, to regular players, it aims to offer an alternative to five-a-side football as an informal leisure activity.

There was a strong turnout for the first Milton Keynes session, with abilities ranging from several complete novices to those returning to the game following a prolonged break.

The friendly atmosphere of the start of the session continued throughout the play, but that’s not to say the action wasn’t frenetic. The game really lived up to its name, with the simplified rules resulting in fewer stoppages than a traditional game, creating an end-to-end match that kept everyone involved and in the thick of the action.

Rosy cheeks and smiling faces as the players left the pitch suggested the session had been a success. One complete newcomer to hockey said: “It was really good fun and got my heart rate up, so it will be good for my fitness.”

With two further taster sessions to follow on March 22 and 29 – and promotion to local businesses through Bucks Sport – it’s hoped that ‘Rush Hockey’ sessions will become a regular occurrence in Milton Keynes.
