Hockey round-up: Men make a good point

editorial image

MILTON Keynes Hockey Club’s men faced Spencer on Saturday desperate for three points to boost their league survival push, but unfortunately were held to a 0-0 draw.

The hosts started well and created the first chance of the game – Brett Hollands firing the wrong side of the post after five minutes. And they continued to force the issue with a couple of short corner efforts which failed to find the backboard.

MK’s hopes were then dealt a blow just before the break when Grant Webster was dismissed for ‘taking one for the team’ as he brought down a Spencer player who raced through on goal. The visitors could not make their advantage count though and the first half ended with no score.

A good team talk from coach Zak Jones got MK fired up for the second period, but again they were wasteful in front of goal as chances came and went and Spencer did enough to hold on for a point. In fact they might have even won the game as MK had to defend no less than nine short corners to earn their draw.

Fortunately results went MK’s way and they now find themselves four points clear of the bottom two places.

MK’s ladies improved their title hopes by beating Sonning 3-1 thanks to goals from Sophie Reynolds, Chrissy Little and Gemma Meredith after Sonning had taken an early lead.

The men’s 2nds and 3rd both enjoyed big wins over sides form Eastcote, while the ladies’ 2nds beat Amersham 5-2 and 3rds lost 2-1 to Henley.
