Kart star Matt is crowned champion but wants to do the double

MATT Fretwell has his eyes set on a unique karting double after he wrapped up his first championship victory last month.

The Walton High student got his hands on the Whilton Mill Mini-Max crown with a round to spare in October and is currently sitting second in the Shenington championship with two rounds left to race.

After a hard fought October round, Matt won the Whilton Mill title when he needed to beat his main rival by seven points to win the championship outright.

But lady luck wasn’t on his side in the heats. In horrible conditions, he spun off the track twice in the first heat and lost out to his rival in heats two and three.

However, the tables were turned in the final. Matt had only qualified in 11th due to his earlier problems, but drove brilliantly to claw his way through the field and back up to sixth place.

As his rivals faltered, that was enough to seal the overall championship, which included two race wins and a handful of podium places.

Matt is also competing in the Shenington championship and is involved in a close battle with another racer for the title.

He finished second in the October final, leaving just the November and December rounds to go. Matt can’t now finish any lower than second overall, and still has high hopes of doing the double.
