Ladies let lead slip in narrow defeat

editorial image

MILTON Keynes Hockey Club’s ladies suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Witney, despite taking the lead in the second half.

From the start MK were forced to defend tightly with goalkeeper Laura Pellington-Woodrow pulling off some excellent saves.

But MK got their heads in the game with player of the match Sarah Lowry working hard in defence and making some driving runs through the middle as both teams had several chances to take the lead, but the score remained locked at 0-0 going into half time.

MK came out strongly in the second period with Jess Barnes, Lou Reynolds and Sofie Sokolowski all working hard down the right hand side of the pitch. And after a few minutes their efforts were rewarded when the visitors were awarded a penalty corner, with Chrissy Little the provider for Sophie Reynolds to open the scoring.

Continuing to push hard, Alice Vigor and Lindsay Kettleborough linked well in the midfield, giving MK chances to extend their advantage. However, at the other end Witney soon forced a penalty corner of their own and a well placed strike drew the home side level.

And fired up by that goal they soon took the lead when the ball found the back of the MK net after a goalmouth scramble.

Elsewhere the ladies’ 3rds suffered a 10-0 defeat to Buckingham and the men’s 2nds beat Wycombe 5-3, with strikes from Dave Breuilly, Jack Luther (2), Paul Hutchinson and an own goal.
