Ladies return with heavy away defeat

NOT many hockey fixtures survived the weekend’s frozen conditions, and Milton Keynes’ Ladies 1sts will have wished their game hadn’t afters they lost at Sonning.

Looking for their first win of 2013, MK began strongly with both Reynolds sisters going close to scoring in the early part of the game.

However, Sonning’s pressure earned the home side a series of penalty corners, and it was from one of those that they opened the scoring.

The MK defence of debutant and player of the match Sonia Fraser, Helen Cooke, Steph Bates and Lindsay Kettleborough worked tirelessly to keep Sonning at bay, and release the ball out to the midfield.

But while the away team failed to score, Sonning had no such problems as they hit the back of the net two more times to take control of the game by the break.

Gemma Meredith and Lucia Martinez Lopez went close for MK, but the goal just wouldn’t come and Sonning scored twice more to increase their lead to 5-0.

Not even a series of penalty corners led to an MK goal, meaning their search for a win this year goes on to this Saturday and the visit of Hampstead & Westminster to Woughton on the Green.

Elsewhere the Men’s 2nds lost 3-2 away at OMT.
