Stannard rides off with top sports award

THE Milton Keynes Sports Achiever of the Year Awards were held at Shenley Leisure Centre on Tuesday evening, with the top prize going to cyclist Ian Stannard.

The professional rider for Team Sky has been busy on the streets of Europe for the Classics cycling season – most recently in Italy and Belgium – and has been named the Sports Personality of the Year for 2011.

The 24-year-old began his racing career at the city’s National Bowl, but now covers around 40,000kms a year – about 14,000 of which are in races.

The U18 Boys award went to badminton player Jed Arksey and the U18 Girls prize belongs to Wakeboarder Chloe Goudie.

The Men’s award was won by long jump star Greg Rutherford – set to fly off to the United States shortly to begin training for London 2012 – and the Women’s honour went to gymnast Bex Whatmore.

Club thrower Thomas Green picked up the Disabled Men’s award, while martial arts star Dani Louise Olver collected the Disabled Women’s prize.

Henry Clark of Bletchley Powerlifting Club took the Men’s 50 and over award, with the Women’s award going to Diane Baldwin of Milton Keynes Athletic Club.

The Primary School award was won by Two Mile Ash and Secondary School prize went to Denbigh School.

Coach of the Year was Megan Allen of MK City Korfball Club, while the Services to Sport award went to Rick Townsend of Milton Keynes Athletic Club and the Team of the Year was Arabian Gymnastic Club.

Finally the Club of the Year award went to Shenley Junior Squash Club and the Volunteer of the Year was Darren Gray of MK City Korfball Club.
