Paralympics legend to sign off in style

Simon says gold in 2012 is achievable

City wheelchair basketball ace Simon Munn is ready to hang up his Great Britain vest – but not before topping the podium at the London Paralympics.

At 41 Munn is very much the elder statesman of the GB squad but has survived a post-Beijing cull and is set to provide the cornerstone for the team in the run-up to 2012.

Coach Murray Treseder has introduced a raft of new talent into the team since scooping bronze in the Far East – and it paid immediate dividends as they finished third in the European Championships in Poland.

Munn, already a veteran of five Paralympic Games, is keeping his fingers crossed as he bows out of the sport in the best possible way in just under three years.

"Things are already starting to take shape ahead of the Paralympics which are creeping up on us very quickly," said Munn, who plays for MK Aces.

"But we've just been to the European Championships which was a great experience and the boys did really well.

"We lost quite a lot of players after Beijing and we've got a very young team so they should be peaking at the right time.

"We've got some very good players and it's a very exciting time for wheelchair basketball.

"Hopefully I can stick around and give the younger players advice and make sure they know what needs doing."

Munn has already had a sneak preview of the Olympic Park in London as the countdown to the Games ducks under the 1,000 days to go mark on December 1.

And Munn insists he likes what he sees and is already itching to get back on the training court.

"I went to visit the site and it was an amazing experience – it's looking very impressive.

"It brings it all to life and makes you realise that the games are actually coming to London which is going to be very exciting for the whole country.

"I can't believe that it's only 1,000 days to go until the games – no matter how many of them I go to I'm always surprised by how quickly it all comes around.

"But I'm sure the team and myself will be ready when the games come around and there is nothing I would like to do more than win a gold medal and retire – that would be the perfect end. to my career in the sport."
