Pro boxing hits Milton Keynes - watch the video

Another first for city as Leighton fighter shines

It was fight night down at stadium:mk on Saturday when Leighton Buzzard-based Goodwin Promotions hosted the city's first ever professional boxing show.

Over 700 fans turned out to watch four bouts and although former Commonwealth and British lightweight champion Graham Earl pulled out of his comeback fight, the evening's entertainment proved a big hit – particuarly thanks to local lad Harry Matthews.

The Leighton hardman put in the best show of his young career to record a ninth win from as many fights.

Fighting at middleweight and in a bout of six, three-minute rounds, Matthews – known as The Rocket for his explosive style in the ring – had far too much for his Birmingham opponent Terry Caruthers and the contest was stopped during the fifth round.

Matthews, 22, soon had the lanky Brummy wobbling with a series of perfectly co-ordinated and powerful blows as the arena exploded into raptures and the noise was deafening.

Two more big hits on the bell meant the referee had no option but to end the contest at the end of the fifth, with Caruthers left in no fit state to continue.

>> Bletchley Amateur Boxing Club are hosting their first gala dinner boxing show on Friday at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel.

Local talented boxers will be on show and tickets to watch - all 18 bouts - will be on sale on the door from 8.30pm for just 10.00.
