Rain is perfect for rowing

Members of Milton Keynes Rowing Club battled against the conditions as they competed in the Northampton Head of the River race.

In the Men’s Novice 4s, Leslie Goodship, Steve Boughton, Phil Capp and Nick Hughes, who have been training hard together all season, got off to a flyer, sending out a strong message to the rest of the competitive field.

Such tactics proved fruitful, as the crew were able to thrust their way into 2nd place for their division.

The quality of the male squad was later built upon when they also tore into second place for the Novice 8 category.

With the damp weather miraculously holding off, victory was found in the Intermediate Pairs race, with Kevin Lilla and Tom Hopkins thrashing long-term rivals Bedford to achieve 1st place in their division.

But it was only a matter of time until the great Northern chill descended upon the river.

As the Men’s Intermediate 4 and two Women’s Intermediate 8s thrust away from the start line in the final round of the races, bouts of hail and strong winds fell down on the crews causing both of the races to be abandoned while crews made a mad dash to shelter.

With strong results all-round from MK Rowing Club, this was certainly a day marking the rapid progression of the crews.
