Regatta season off to the perfect start
MILTON Keynes Rowing Club celebrated a winning start to this year's regatta season with a victory in the open senior 3 coxless four at Cambridge.
On the club's first visit to this event the mixed crew beat Rob Roy by a third of a length over the 400m course, despite the other crew being able to enjoy the benefit of having the home advantage.
The quad was crewed by their new grouping of Graham Targett, Steve Lawson, Rob Heywood and Jo Heywood.
Jo Heywood, a former British indoor rowing champion at under 16 level, stepped in at the very last moment when the original sculler was forced to drop out of the event.
The competition was also Graham Targett's first outing in a scull, and the first time that father and daughter combination of Jo and Rob Heywood had ever been in a competitive race together.
This victory came in the afternoon's racing, following the head-to-head races in the morning.
These comprised a 2.6km time-trial downstream on the River Cam, followed by the challenge of rowing back upstream, with the times then being added together.
The women's senior 3 eight and the open senior 3 quad competed in this event, with the women's eight team beating the other club crew in the event and the quad crew left racing for time only with no competiton.
As well as the victorious quad crew, a women's novice coxed four and a veterans double scull competed in the afternoon's regatta.
The women beat City of Cambridge in the first round before falling to Cambridge '99 in the final.
The veterans double scull lost in their first round to the eventual winners.
