Olney narrowly lost out in a tight-knit affair to Oadby Wyggestonians on Saturday, going down 21-12.
With two new New Zealanders lining up for Olney, spirits were high, but they found themselves behind as the visitors kicked two penalties.
The home side were back in it before the break though as Will Durden went over for a superb try to reduce the deficit to 6-5.
It was another penalty which extended Oadby’s lead in the second half before they scored their first try, courtesy of an Olney handling error gifting the ball to the visitors when it looked as though they were more likely to score.
With a 14-5 lead, Olney sparked into life as Rich Cowan crossed over in the corner. Kiwi Kayne Middleton kicked a superb conversion from the touchline to bring it back to 14-12.
But one more score from Oadby, courtesy of a rapid break from half way, secured the victory for the visitors.
Olney mounted a few late attacks, but the Oadby defence held out.
