Champions hand Olney a heavy defeat
South West Two East league
Olney Rugby Club completed their South West Two East programme with a thumping 75-0 defeat at champions Maidenhead on Saturday.
Olney made a few changes for the trip and the game was played at a high tempo throughout. But Maidenhead showed why they are worthy champions and demonstrated why support play is invaluable at this level.
Olney had a couple of chances to score in the first half, though failed to recycle the ball quickly enough and they trailed 39-0 at half time.
At this point the score did not truly reflect the overall play.
The home side's tries had all come with individual players spotting a gap or breaking through a tackle in Olney's normally concrete defence with quick support play leading to the scores.
Olney did manage to play some good attacking rugby with hard work from the forwards but basic errors punished their hard work.
The hosts controlled the second half but Olney did not give up and they showed true grit and determination.
Unfortunately the final score was a punishing one at 75-0.
Maidenhead showed how well a team on the top of their form can play.
But Olney can take some satisfaction that they finished out of the bottom three in their first season in the league after promotion from the Southern Counties North.
Having shown a 100 per cent commitment in both pre season and throughout the season, there is no reason why Olney should not better their league position next season.
>> Olney's senior players travel to Manila in the Phillipines tomorrow, Friday, where they will educate youngsters in a number of schools about rugby and play in a couple of fixtures as they did two years ago in South Africa.
