Curtain falls on Bletchley's season
South West Two East league
Bletchley brought the curtain down on their South West Two East season with a 52-7 defeat home defeat against third place Cheltenham, the Manor Fields outfit finishing in the bottom two in the table.
Bletchley had been safe in the knowledge there was no relegation and they will already be making plans for a more successful 2010 season after this term brought them just four wins in 22 games, the side deducted two points after failing to fulfil one fixture.
Bletchley conceded too many penalties, one resulting in a Cheltenham drive and a try, the conversion successful. Bletchley's tackling was impressive but the pressure told again when the visitors scored their second try.
Bletchley's opportunities were few and far between but they still only trailed 14-0 at the interval.
The start of the second half saw the home side make some good driving runs in the forwards with flanker Luci Nanci, hooker Chris Coussell and lock Al Nisbet playing well.
Adam Dempsey was also catching good ball in the line-out.
But Cheltenham broke away to score between the posts and they then added two quick tries, one converted, to lead 33-0 lead.
Bletchley tired and a poor pass went into Cheltenham hands and they raced away to score again.
Two more converted tries extended the lead to 52 points but Bletchley had the last word and a strong run from Nisbet set up Carl Miller and he off-loaded to scrum half Jack Couzens who scored a beautiful try between the posts, Turnbull converting.
The score reflected Bletchley's lack of fitness this season but Nisbet, a qualified fitness coach, has already committed himself to preparing the side for next season's challenge.
