Bletchley Ladies remarkable undefeated streak came to an abrupt end on Sunday as they were beaten 8-0 by neighbours Olney.
Without a loss in the league in nearly two seasons, and only a cup defeat in March last year, Bletchley looked to extend their lead in the Women’s NC Midlands 1, while Olney, hot on their heels in second, were looking to close the gap at the top of the table.
The game started brightly with some good passages of play from both teams. Olney were good in possession but failed to make the most of it, unable to break through Bletchley’s solid defence.
Forwards Alex Townsend and Amanda Cornish led Olney up pitch with some strong running, and a try seemed certain but the supporters were left frustrated as the home side couldn’t convert.
Bletchley kept Olney at bay until a penalty was conceded and Olney centre Jenny Miles stepped up to take them 3-0 up.
Bletchley started the second half showing some good form using their fast back line to gain territory.
Solid tackling from captain Jen Micklewright and Charlotte Brown prevented any damage and some incisive running from centre Kelly Robertson put Olney back on the front foot.
Once again Olney seemed unable to push over the line or find a gap and the Bletchley 10 did well to gain territory with the boot.
A fumbled backs move from Olney gave Bletchley possession and they took advantage to drive up the pitch although no try was coming.
Eventually Olney won the ball back and after consistent pressure it came out wide in safe hands to Leanne Sarjeant who outpaced her opposite number to touch down and put Olney into an 8-0 lead.
With the threat of defeat hanging over them, Bletchley fought back but a staunch effort from the Olney defence held them at bay until the final whistle.
The result means Bletchley’s lead atop the league remains but the gap is down to two points with three games to go.
