Olney youngsters march on to semi finals

OLNEY’S U16 rugby youngsters reached the semi finals of the East Midlands Plate competition thanks to a 71-8 thrashing of Ampthill.

In their biggest win of the season so far, tries came from left, right and centre as the ball was moved fluidly from the breakdown, through the backs and out wide.

Tackling was strong, set pieces worked well, and the ball went perfectly to hand. Fine performances from all the squad meant Ampthill struggled just to gain possession.

The team was buoyed in the second half by the return to competitive rugby of Otto Fenske, who scored twice, while Max Simpson got three and Simon Herridge two.

Other tries came from Jacob McGivern, Gabri Hall-Rapanotti, Tom Vine and Charlie Harris, and Guyon Bedward kicked all but three conversions in windy conditions.

Ampthill came alive in the last five minutes to claw back a try. And even though they were beaten quite early in the match, their play never turned cynical.

Olney captain Gabri Hall-Rapanotti said afterwards: “Ampthill didn’t play poorly, we were just on fire. Bring on the Plate semis!”

Squad: Tom Robinson, Connor Chamberlain, Henry Westray, Guyon Bedward, Austin Dobson, Mitchell Cunningham, Gabri Hall-Rapanotti (c), Charlie Harris, Will Colson, Max Simpson, Jacob McGivern, Jake Glover, Tom Vine, Danny Harris, Simon Herridge, Otto Fenske, Henry Folds, Jamie Sharp, Billy Ward, Nelson Jarvis, Paddy Mortimer, Lewis Allen.
