Olney ladies are promoted
Shelford beaten by nine
Olney Rugby Club's ladies have won promotion to the North One after a convincing 21-12 win over Shelford on Sunday.
In very warm conditions and in front of a large crowd, Olney made a nervous start.
However, Olney soon got into their stride and number eight Sarah Allen led the attack with some excellent breaks while centre Kath Hardwick and flanker Helen Hacker both added weight to Olney's attacking options.
At this point there seemed no way through Shelford's rock solid defensive line.
Olney's scrum held firm and the Shelford pack had no answer to Olney's superior power as hooker Clair Swallow led the charge stealing several balls against the head.
The referee's whistle too often interrupted play but Olney finally broke through with a try from centre and captain Maddy Bowley.
Sarah Allen then spotted another gap and burst through for the second try but Shelford were quick to respond with a try of their own.
Olney seemed lost their shape and Shelford then took a quick penalty to score another try and reduce the gap to 14-12 at half time.
The second half was a messy affair. Shelford did well to keep Olney at bay for long periods, winger Mary Hardwick keeping Olney on the move.
It was Maddy Bowley who eventually broke through and she converted her own try.
Shelford kept up the pressure but Olney held on to seal their promotion from the Championship Midlands Two.
