Promotion hopes end in defeat for City

Southern Counties North league

Milton Keynes Rugby Club's hopes of promotion were brought to an end on Saturday when they were beaten 24-15 at Aylesbury.

With just one league game left, City find themselves three points behind second placed Marlow and four behind Buckingham after the Essex side beat the league leaders at the weekend.

But following the death of player David Eales last week City minds would have been elsewhere, and a minute of silence was held before the Aylesbury game as a mark of respect.

The hosts still had relegation fears going into the game but they hit the opening try of the afternoon to ease their nerves.

The sides exchanged penalties soon after as City fought their way back into the game, Andy White kicking City's first three points.

But Aylesbury finished the half the stronger of the sides and their second try and conversion before the break put them in the driving seat at 17-3.

City started the second period with a positive attitude and looked to narrow the deficit. But against the run of play the hosts bagged another try and with their kicker in excellent form they increased their advantage to 24-3.

As the game drew to an end the visitors finally got some reward for their efforts when Neal Williamson went over for a try, shortly followed by Karin McConnell who ran all of 40 yards to score.

Mr Eales' funeral is to be held at the club's Field Lane ground on Thursday April 16, with family and friends asked to arrive for 1pm.
