Rugby round-up: Olney restore some pride

editorial image

OLNEY haven’t given up on preserving their place in the South West One East league just yet after recording their third win of the season with a 20-13 beating of relegation rivals Swanage & Wareham.

The men from Dorset won 48-0 when the sides met earlier in the season, but it was a different story back in Olney where the hosts won to cut the gap to Swanage to a still daunting 20 points, 15 to second bottom Buckingham.

With 15 defeats from 18 league games, Olney’s chances of survival are slim at the very best, but they have at least managed to restore some pride in recent weeks.

Saturday’s victory was their second of 2012 having beaten Buckingham away in early January. And the manner of the win was the most impressive thing, with Duck giving them an early lead before Swanage scored a try of their own to level it up.

Despite losing a man to the sin bin, the hosts went back ahead when Parkin went over and Letts converted. He then kicked a penalty before the break to give Olney a 15-5 half time advantage.

The visitors cut the deficit with an early second half penalty, but a great team try rounded off by Hannah gave Olney some breathing space and a second Swanage score late on wasn’t enough.

Bletchley enjoyed a 25-0 victory over Marlow at Manor Fields, lifting them two places to seventh in the table. There were two tries form Matt Nobes and one from Ryan Cane, with Phil Harman kicking two conversions and two penalties.

Milton Keynes had the weekend off, but weather permitting will resume their push for promotion from the Southern Counties North League at Aylesbury on Saturday.
