Salisbury end Olney's hopes of a double
South West Two East league
Hopes of a league double over Salisbury ended with Saturday's 38-12 defeat, Olney now almost certain to finish in the bottom four this season.
Olney went into the game just three points adrift of Salisbury and having beaten them 15-12 on the opening day of the season, were confident of a repeat win.
But as so often happens, Salisbury fielded a stronger side on home soil, Olney welcoming back number eight Gareth Cahill.
Olney winger Will Edwards made one try saving tackle before Olney broke and Chris Parnham knocked on with a score looking inevitable.
Olney went close again when Dave Smith was bundled into touch but it was Salisbury who dominated play from then on, the opening try converted from wide out.
Salisbury continued to keep the pressure on and added a second try which was again converted.
The visitors were further punished for lapses in concentration as Salisbury added two tries, one of which was converted. But Olney replied with a try from James Padfield after some hard work by the forwards, Smith's conversion leaving Olney 28-7 adrift at the interval.
Salisbury opened the second half with an early try but again Olney responded with a fine break, the move breaking down with the award of a penalty.
Olney made a couple of changes with Adam Kelsall replaced by Josh Gold and Ollie Brackenbury replaced at prop by Phil Berry.
The visitors had to increase their work-rate when Cahill was sin-binned for 10 minutes but he returned to the pitch to score Olney's second try.
Saturday sees Olney at home to Reading Abbey.
