Milton Keynes City men's volleyball team have completed an historic double by winning both the Northants and Herts league titles.
The club formed from the ashes of Abbey only last year sealed the Northants League with two straight sets victories over Northampton and Kingsthorpe B and won the Herts League after Barnet beat Enfield, this leaving City clear winners.

The penultimate game of the season saw an under strength Northampton side come to Oakgrove.

City were also under strength and were forced to use a one-setter system with Rudiger making a rare appearance as off hitter.

The first set saw Walker in scintillating serving form with two spells yielding 11 points.

He was ably assisted by the rest of the team once they settled into their game and City took it 25-14.

The second set saw City race away into a commanding lead. The powerful spiking of Kiczynski allied to the more subtle approach of Martin saw both enjoying a lot of success at outside hitter.

The two big guns through the middle, Gough and Walker, contributed their usual high tally of points and again City won 25-15.

City proved too strong in the third set and led 11-2 and they went on to clinch a 25-15 win with Martin serving out the final three points to round off an excellent display.

City wrapped up the title with a very solid performance against Kingsthorpe B. Again it was a case of getting six fit players on court rather than worrying about selection policy!

City finished the first set strongly and they clinched a 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 win.

Hours before the Kingsthorpe match, City heard the news that their only rivals for the Herts title, Enfield, had come unstuck at Barnet the previous evening.

Coach Walker was full of praise for the squad saying: "We had a couple of blips in both leagues before Christmas but the run since the turn of the year has been phenomenal.

"We have had lots of injuries and illnesses so it's been a real squad effort."

A sposkesman for sponsors Cargo Granite added: "It's nice to be associated with best in the business!"

City are looking to bolster their ladies' squad for next season and new male players are also welcome. For more information visit www.mkcityvolleyball.co.uk
