DEPARTURES has been labelled as ‘Japan’s answer to Six Feet Under’, and there was no bigger fan of that warped and brilliant drama than GO!
All of which makes Wednesday’s airing of the film at the Open University Lecture Theatre an alluring proposition.
It is a wry, bittersweet film that relates the story of a failed cellist who returns home to take a job in a funeral parlour (can you see the similarity to SFU creeping in?)
Take a seat and learn about the rituals of Japan in a moving, sensitive and yet gently amusing way.
Departures clocks in at just over two hours long, and it is an award winner too – bagging the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009.
Join with other members of the Open Film Society and view at the early showing of 6.15pm, or opt for 8.45pm.
