I CAN’T quite get my head around promoting pantomimes for Christmas when we’re yet to get through the summer but bagging a big name is a game all the professional theatres play as early as possible in their programming schedule to give themselves the maximum time to sell tickets.
The Royal & Derngate, which traditionally stages two family shows at its Northampton venue, has announced this week that Bobby Davro was returning to star as Buttons in Cinderella.
A spokesmnan said: “The theatre is delighted to welcome back Bobby Davro following audiences’ rapturous reception to his hilarious performance in last year’s pantomime.”
Bobby is a man of many talents – comedian, impressionist, game-show host and actor – having soared to fame in the 1980s with TV shows such as Bobby Davro on The Box and Bobby’s Sketch Pad, before joining the BBC to make Rock with Laughter and a host of other shows.
Bobby made his straight acting debut in EastEnders as the loveable rogue Vinnie Monks and has also appeared on Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Dancing On Ice, though he is most famed for his hilarious work as an impressionist. He has established himself as one of the UK’s leading panto stars.
Martin Sutherland, chief executive of Royal & Derngate added: “The response to Bobby Davro’s performance in our panto last year was just incredible – from Twitter posts to comments via our website and letters sent in to the theatre, the feedback was brilliant.
“Bobby literally was the talk of the town. We can genuinely say he is back by popular demand and look forward to welcoming him back to Northampton again!“
Tickets are flying out of the box office so book early - yes before the summer! Cinderella runs on the Derngate stage from December 7 to January 6. Tickets can be booked on 01604 624811 or online www.royalandderngate.co.uk.
