Fiddling fun at The Stables

Duh, a Feast of Fiddles, of course!

Featuring members of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and the ‘grandfather of folk rock frumming’ Dave Mattacks, the half dozen players will go flddle-mad from 8pm this evening.

Jake & Elwood and The Black Rhino Band will charge at you tomorrow with a rhythm and blues spectacular and all of those hits you expect to hear –from Everybody Needs Somebody to Sweet Home Chicago.

The Woburn Sands Band are a versatile lot, and Saturday night’s show will span big band sounds to classical and jazz to pop, at this, the 49th concert in the Drakeloe Series.

On the same night over in Stage 2, Tom Tooney, a regular with The Zombies and The Colin Blunstone Band will bring his own six-piece band to cut loose with their own variety led show, with blues, jazz, rock, and celtic sounds emanating.

Jazz Matters, Sir John Dankworth told us so, and set up this regular meeting of like minded soul to discuss the genre.

It’s an informal, cosy gathering.

Not high brow, just celebratory.

Between 1 and 3pm a percussion masterclass for young musicians is being hosted with international percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. She has been instrumental (excuse the pun) in lobbying the government to invest in music for young people too, so really, she should be the one getting the drum roll!

If we look ahead to Wednesday, we see the Scott Matthews Band live n the main auditorium, a chance to see the chap who has toured with Foo Fighters, Snow Patrol and Robert Plant in the intimate confines and superb acoustic turns of the Jim Marshall auditorium.

Over on Stage 2, acoustic project Chamber will ‘explore influences from classic chamber, folk and middle eastern traditions....to create an exciting new voice for British jazz.’
