It’s showtime!

IT might be only a small village, but be prepared to be impressed if you visit the annual Open Horticultural Show and summer fete in Drayton Parslow

It takes place on Saturday, August 20 at the village hall and recreation ground.

Since 1944, towards the end of World War II when supplies were short and people were urged to ‘Dig for Victory’ and ‘Grow your Own’, this annual show has opened its doors to anyone to enter – not just Drayton residents.

One of only three such ‘open’ shows affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society, the show still welcomes entries in a range of classes that include home-grown vegetables and flowers, cookery, wine and cordials, jams and chutneys, handicrafts, an increasingly popular photographic section with eight subjects this year, plus children’s classes in four age groups from toddlers to teens. The show regularly attracts more than 600 individual entries.

This year’s show, the 67th, features all kinds of attractions for a great afternoon out – Ark Farm mobile petting farm, Nuts About Mutts dog agility display (plus a chance to participate with your own dog), a traditional farrier demonstration, children’s entertainer, crafts arena, the Thames Valley Police tractor, craft fair, side shows and traditional stalls such as coconut shy, plate smashing, bungee run and pony rides.
