Review - Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at Milton Keynes Theatre

However, the fun that you have in the company of Michael Praed’s Lawrence Jameson and Noel Sullivan’s Freddy Benson makes you laugh along with the sheer ostentatiousness of their plans.

Based on the hit 80s film of the same name starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, it sees the two make a bet to try and seduce both Carley Stenson’s Christine Colgate and her money.

But a play like this wouldn’t be the same without heart, played with abundance by Stenson who, while initially ditzy, is lovable as the story progresses.

And there is plenty of humour to be had watching the show. The moments where the show acknowledges and plays to the fourth wall of the audience gives this show an extra cheeky dimension which suits the playful tone of the musical.

I suspect that like so many movies turned into musicals over the years, this will turn into the definitive version of this story.
