TWO Gentlemen visit Royal & Derngate

SHAKESPEARE’S story of love, friendship and infidelity is re-invented in a fresh, fun and vibrant new production of Two Gentlemen of Verona directed by Matthew Dunster, whose past successes have included Troilus and Cressida and The Frontline at The Globe.

The story follows close friends, Valentine and Proteus, as they compete for the love of the beautiful Silvia, daughter to the Duke of Milan. When Valentine is banished from the city, their friendship is tested to its limits and only through a maze of disguise and deception are they reconciled.

“It is really important to keep Shakespeare relevant in energetic new productions like this, which bring the text to life without losing any of the magic of the original language,” said artistic director Laurie Sansom. “This is a great opportunity to see one of Shakespeare’s more rarely performed plays, a thoroughly entertaining example of the bard’s earlier work.”
