The owner of the drugs, believed to be cannabis, is thought to have dumped them there in panic when he spotted police.

Neighbourhood officers were on patrol yesterday afternoon when they became suspicious about a car they spotted being driven on the V8, near Fishermead.

They followed the vehicle until it came to a halt outside the One Stop store on Springfield.

The occupants quickly got out and went into the shop. As soon as they returned to the car, police activated their stop and search powers, checking for drugs.

"But nothing was found on them," said a police spokesman.

Still suspicious, officers went into the shop and asked to see the CCTV footage.

This clearly showed one of the occupants of the car "discarding something" in the sweet aisle, they said.

Checks revealed a drugs package nestled among the KitKats.

"The person who discarded the item will be dealt with shortly," said the police spokesman.
