Stadium MK set to host government-funded 5G trials including driverless taxis and robots

Experiments at the home of the Milton Keynes Dons will include driverless road vehicles, drones and robots.

The robots will be used for goods delivery and tested out in hospitality scenarios. The drones along with autonomous surveillance vehicles will be tested in an event security capacity.

Mk Dons director John Cove said: "We are delighted that the MK 5G Create project has been selected to receive support from the DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport). We have been able to bring together a world class team to integrate and exploit 5G capacity in a dynamic real world environment - this will truly demonstrate how Stadium MK home of MK Dons, working with MK Council and our partners can use new technology to support a major international sporting and cultural venue."

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport created an open competition called 5G Create offering funding to 15 projects to test the effectiveness of new 5G technology in a number of environments including: tourism, sport, logistics, creative industries and construction. Milton Keynes was one of the areas selected, with its 30,000 capacity stadium providing a great testing ground for futuristic experiments.

This Milton Keynes 5G project will receive £2,397,243 government funding, the overall project has a valuation of £4,103,022.
