Tesco apologise again for 'rotten' smell plaguing supermarket in Milton Keynes

Supermarket giants Tesco are to dig up the drains outside their Wolverton store in a bid to stop a mysterious bad smell causing complaints from shoppers.

The Citizen reported last September that shoppers complained the supermarket smelled like a "cross between rotten vegetables and raw sewage".

Some customers claimed the pong had been about for years and said sometimes it was so strong that they had to leave the store.

At the time Tesco apologised and blamed the drains outside the store. They arranged for them to be cleaned and promised it would fix the problem.

However, this week the smell was back, and one irate shopper kicked up a stink on Twitter to complain.

In a tweet to Tesco he wrote: "Your Wolverton store McConnell Dr, MK12 5RJ has a real issue, for a long time there has been a horrendous smell throughout the store. This needs investigating as you must be losing customers over it. It has been well documented on local social media by numerous people."

Tesco replied saying: "I am so sorry about the smell in this store. That really doesn't make for a pleasant shopping experience. I have called the Duty Manager and they have let me know that they have maintenance in now looking at this."

Their tweet added: "They've found they need to dig up the drainage and sort it from there so I don't have a timescale for you but we hope to have this resolved as soon as possible."

"It's possible the issue with the drains in this store has been a reoccurring issue, however, they are looking into a proper resolution right now. I'll feed your post back to the store manager."

But some customers are not holding out much hope. One said: "It's the Victorian drains. When something is washed down them it kicks up the smell. There's been lots of attempts to stop it to no avail. When you have been in there a while you get used to it."
