Age UK appeals urgently for funds to buy essential item for pensioners in Milton Keynes during coronavirus pandemic

Age UK has put out an emergency appeal for cash donations, tinned food and essential items to help elderly people in MK.

The charity's development manager Paula Ayers has set up a GoFundMe crowdfunding page with a goal of raising £3,000 to provide care packages and help services.

"We are urgently asking for donations so that we can go directly to suppliers to buy essential goods for free distribution to the older residents of Milton Keynes," she said.

"As a local independent charity we do not have the financial capability to do this without your help."

Age UK is also offering an emergency shopping and prescription collection service to residents of MK aged over 70 who do not have existing support.during this difficult time.

"Please help by donating funds to help us provide this service. We are also able to accept donations of tinned food and essential items at the Peartree Centre," said Paula.

But this week the charity has been forced to cancel all its lunch clubs - which often provide elderly people with their only home-cooked hot meal of the day.

"We have had to change the way we provide services in people's homes. The Independent Living Service is continuing to support clients whilst minimising the risk to them and our staff," said a spokesman,.

"We are focusing on providing a shopping service and the Footcare Service will continue where clients wish. We are evaluating how we can best support older people in Milton Keynes over the next few months. We will be redeploying staff and volunteers and using all available resources to provide support in the most effective way," she added.
