Milton Keynes police chief reveals force has already made coronavirus arrests with one man jailed for spitting at officers

Thames Valley Police Chief Constable John Campbell has revealed the impact the pandemic is having on the force - which serves Milton Keynes.

In a interview he praised the public for engaging with police during the new rules introduced by Government.

However, he did reveal Thames Valley is dealing with the public swiftly if they break the law.

"We have made a number of arrests in relation to the coronavirus legislation," he said - and confirmed 16 people have been dealt with in the Thames Valley area.

He added: "We have had one incident where one of our officers was spat at. That man has been charged and is now serving a custodial sentence."

The chief constable also revealed that although they currently have enough officers as there is no longer a night-time economy to deal with - that they have approached retired officers due to the unknown nature of the crisis, with 200 offering their services.

He said: "Morale is really good. I have been impressed and really encouraged by all our officers."

He added. "The response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive. My thanks go to the public for all of those who are complying with the legislation."
