One woman, who can see the Grafton Gate facility from her flat window, said: "We expected to see big queues as people rushed to finally get tested, but it's all very sedate.

"Over the course of a morning or afternoon we see several cars drive in one by one and then drive out again a short while later, but that's all."

Another agreed it was "quiet" but said the centre seemed to be working until quite late at night.

"It all seems to be very efficient and well run. We just expected there would be big queues of people."

The tests being carried out at the centre are for key workers only, and priority is being given to NHS workers.

The five buildings covered by tent structures sprang up overnight at the weekend in the car park, which is opposite the former Toys R Us store.
