New restrictions for people doing daily exercise along canal towpaths in Milton Keynes

Due to the risk of coronavirus, the Canal & River Trust has issued an order today for people not to walk  anywhere near the canal where boats are moored.

A spokesman said: "Our canals and rivers are local to you... If you use the towpath for your daily exercise or journey to undertake essential work, please now avoid any stretches with boats moored against the towpath, and strictly observe social distancing at all times, following the latest advice from government."

But, in case people miss the scenic stretches, or if they are self-isolating and unable to get out at all, the Trust has launched a virtual experience online, in the form of a special 'escape' video.

Meanwhile boaters on the canal have been told to stop all non-essential travel and the Trust has suspending the usual requirement to move every 14 days..

A spokesman for the Canal & River Trust said: "We will be doing whatever we can to support our customers and protect the waterways so we can return to enjoying them fully when the crisis is over. We will keep the situation under active review and update you in line with changing circumstances and guidance."
