Six shoppers arrested in two days for abusing supermarket staff in Milton Keynes

Six people have been arrested in the past two days for abusing, assaulting or even spitting at staff in supermarkets, the Citizen can reveal.

Police have now issued a warning that they will ill seek the "maximum punishments available" for anybody who abuses shop staff and other key workers during this pandemic.

The six people have been arrested for various offences including harassment, causing alarm and distress and assault.

The victims include four members of staff who were spat at, said a police spokesman, who described the increase in shop staff abuse as "completely unacceptable".

He said: "The staff are working hard and putting themselves at risk in order to ensure we are able to have a constant supply of essential food and goods. They should not have to put up with abuse from members of the public that are frustrated with the self-distancing guidance."
