Young graduate makes stacks of free protective masks for carers and vulnerable people in Milton Keynes

A young university graduate who set up her own eco-friendly textile company is working flat out from her family home to make free reusable cotton masks for care homes, vulnerable people and carers all over Milton Keynes.

Radhika Srinivasan launched EcoTextura Ltd a few months ago, well before the coronavirus crisis, after finishing her degree in engineering.

The company's aim was to specialise in n providing eco-friendly alternatives to PPE and textile medical products. Yet, at the time of setting up the business, Radhika had no idea these products would soon be in colossal demand.

"We are very early stage in our business development, and unfortunately our suppliers are preparing for lock-down at this time - so we knew we had take matters into our own hands," she said.

Over the past week, Radhika and her parents have worked tirelessly to produce stacks of three-ply washable and reusable cotton masks from their MK home.

They are distributing these for free to Willen Hospice, elderly care homes, vulnerable people, carers and elderly people in the area.

"The orders keep coming, we're still sewing away and are currently contacting local Trusts to see if we can help there.," said Radhika.

She wants to up production and is appealing for people who can sew and have have sewing machines to pitch in and help.

"We can drop off mask making kits and coordinate everything," she said.

Anybody who can supply or donate fabric would be welcome. It can be cotton, medical fabric, calico, canvas or demin. Elastic (4/5mm) is also needed, as is thread.

Radhika can also make protective medical gowns and has her own sewing patters, She would like to hear from hospitals, trusts, elderly homes, charities, key-workers who desperately require more gowns.

"It would be great if we can get the help and raise awareness for this," she said.
