Grant’s friends told him he was mad to take a job in a care centre. But the “best decision he ever made” has made him award-winning.

Grant Mugford was an electrical engineer before joining PJ Care’s maintenance team. His friends thought he was mad to make the change but he’s never looked back. And his love of his job has won him a national Great British Care award.

“It’s honestly the best decision I’ve ever made. I have a real impact on the residents’ day to day lives and I love that.

“I might be creating an access hatch one day and the next I’m giving a resident a bucket of water so they can come round and ‘paint’ the walls with me.”

Not your average care home

PJ Care is not your average care home – most of their residents are under the age of 65, and they support people with conditions such as young onset dementia, Parkinson’s disease and MS, as well as provide rehabilitation for those with acquired brain injuries.

It’s recruiting now for a number of departments, and previous experience is not always vital – your compassion and commitment are equally important.

Bluebirds in Shenley Lodge and Mallard House in Grange Farm are easily accessible by bus, making this flexible workplace a really attractive prospect.

Proud to work for PJ Care

Staff rated the firm as an ‘outstanding’ place to work in the Best Companies ratings in 2021 – 88 per cent of the staff who responded said they were proud to work for PJ Care.

It’s not difficult to see why; the firm is an accredited Living Wage employer, and is ranked 9th in the top health and social care companies to work for in the UK.

“The company is really approachable and everyone is treated equally,” says Grant. “We see the chairman on the floor every week, in the same scrubs as us.”

Roles on offer

PJ Care has current vacancies for healthcare assistants, both those who already work in the sector and are looking for their next role, and people who have no previous experience – if you are caring, compassionate and have commitment to your work, you could be just who they are looking for.

There are also vacancies for nurses, housekeepers, maintenance and catering staff.

The package

As well as great rates of pay, there are career and development opportunities within the firm, an employee benefits scheme, paid overtime, online learning and a quarterly awards scheme for staff.

You can also enjoy the annual staff events, five weeks of holiday and the satisfaction of doing meaningful work with a family-run firm.
