Customers were given the first 30 minutes of every ride for free during June, July and August to encourage people to use the scheme’s bicycles.

Operated by leading bike share firm nextbike, the scheme has had more than 154,418 rentals in Milton Keynes since it launched four years ago. There are now 320 bikes and 44 stations across the city.

Krysia Solheim, nextbike UK MD, said: “The people of Milton Keynes have shown us that their love affair with cycling continues to grow month-on-month, which is fantastic to see.

“By making small changes such as opting to take a nextbike instead of jumping in the car, our customers are helping to bring about positive changes that will lead to reduced congestion and CO2 levels, and will also help them to be fitter and healthier.

“We hope the changes that people have made over the last few months during lockdown will become habits that people are happy to embrace for the long term.”

Nextbike, which has more than 200 schemes across the globe, is also offering businesses the chance to sign up to its corporate membership scheme for a reduced fee in the hope it will encourage commuters to make a greener, healthier commute.

Businesses currently have the chance to buy half-price corporate memberships for £2 per person, giving their employees access to free 30-minute cycling rides across the city.

Ms Solheim added: “We’ve all got an amazing opportunity to take a step back and look at how we could all do things differently – and the businesses of Milton Keynes can play a really important role in driving this change.”
