Starlight Express: Rolling into MK Theatre later this month

Happily, the new season is as exciting as ever.

Theatre lovers are buzzing after the news that musical phenomenon Ghost is coming direct from the West End to haunt our stage in September.

Based on the Oscar-winning film of the 90’s, this timeless fantasy tells the story of Sam, trapped as ghost between this world and the next.

Also only recently announced, smash-hit ‘Wicked’ will fly into town next year, telling the incredible untold story of two girls whose adventures in Oz ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Some city favourites return by popular demand this season, including Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s inspiring masterpiece ‘Evita’ (with Wet, Wet, Wet front man Marti Pellow) in May.

‘CATs’ – the enchanting fusion of music, dance and verse set in a fantasy, feline adventure playground – will see the Jellicle Cats slink centre stage in June.

Another Lloyd Webber hit, ‘Starlight Express’, powers into the city at the end of this month.

This futuristic tale guarantees a ride of a lifetime with extraordinary, non-stop roller-choreography.

Richard O’Brien’s ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ with Oliver Thornton, will ensure fun and frivolity in July, while rock ‘n’ roll sensation ‘Dreamboats and Petticoats’ in August will take audiences right back to the golden days of the 60’s.

Drama enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice with the latest offerings.

Alan Ayckbourn’s charmingly English production ‘Relatively Speaking’ (starring Felicity Kendal, Jonathon Coy, Kara Tointon and Max Bennet) and Mike Leigh’s classic ‘Abigail’s Party’ (with Hannah Waterman and Martin Marquez) both arrive at the theatre in May.

In July, an epic tale of love and war comes to the stage thanks to Sebastian Faulks’ ‘Birdsong’ while Agatha Christie’s ‘Go Back for Murder’ has a cast to die for.

Youngsters have not been forgotten in the latest line-up – everyone’s favourite explorer ‘Dora the Explorer’ will be searching for the city of lost toys, while ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ will arrive... with attitude!

Balletomanes won’t want to miss Sofia National Ballet when they bring three classical masterpieces – ‘Giselle’, ‘Don Quixote’ and ‘Swan Lake’ to the city.

Formed in 1928 and steeped in Russian tradition, the acclaimed company has become a national cultural institution in Bulgaria and their trio of ballets will ensure that there is something to suit all tastes – whether the romantic ‘Giselle’, dynamic ‘Don Quixote’ or unforgettable ‘Swan Lake’.

A series of one-night shows includes music from MKCO, Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, One Night of Queen, The Drifters in Concert, The Three Phantoms and the Rat Pack Spectacular.

Funny guys Sean Lock, Julian Clary, Jimmy Carr and Al Murray are guaranteed to sell fast and make you laugh.

Later in the year, we also have the return of three beautiful operas from Glyndebourne on Tour and sell-out success ‘Dirty Dancing’ plus this year’s panto (Snow White) to look forward to.

With such a great season mapped out, the greatest difficulty is narrowing down which shows to see!
