In at the deep end for charity

If there is one story guaranteed to make a splash this week, it's Saturday's Swimathon at Stantonbury Leisure Centre.

The Rotary Club of Milton Keynes organises the annual event, and since its launch in 1994, a whopping £450,000 has been raised.

Most of the money swells the coffers of local charities.

This year’s recipients are The Mayor’s Charities, MK Hospital and Royal British Legion, along with Willen Hospice, Supershoes, Thames Valley Air Ambulance, Age UK Milton Keynes and Dogs for Good.

Teams are all signed up for Saturday’s event now, but there is nothing to stop you popping along and lending your support to the event – and if you want to cheer on your MK MP, Iain Stewart will be in the water at 4pm.

>The pesky weather has proven quite the bug-bear for organisers of Hula Animal Rescue’s essential monthly fundraisers in recent times.

So can we all keep our fingers crossed (and maybe do a little sun dance?) ahead of Sunday’s Mum’s the Word event.

If the skies play our way and the field stays dry, it’ll be all hands to the charity pumps for a cash-sweller of an afternoon.

This time around, pamper treatments for humans and dogs will be given, and the favourite Hula Dog Parade will get tails wagging at 2.30pm.

As the pooches strut their stuff, us two-legged types can enjoy refreshments from The Trough Cafe and pick up a bargain (or two) in the bazaar and over at the Pet Bed Shed.

The kids are always well catered for at these events too, with plenty of fun and games for them to get stuck into.

Entry is £2 for adults, accompanied children admitted free.

Hula Animal Rescue is located at Glebe Farm in Aspley Guise, and it provides an essential lifeline for our furry (and the not so furry) friends in need.

Sunday’s event will run between 1pm and 3.30pm. For more information on the charity and how you can help, visit www.hularescue.org
