Hosted by the official The Spider Plant Rescue Centre HQ in Milton Keynes, the event will be held on Saturday May 30.

A spokesman for the centre said: "The simple fact of the matter is we have too many babies...I haven’t got the space to nurse them and there’s frankly no way I can bring myself to throw the new babies in the bin."

She added: "We originally harvested 14 fresh offspring to give away at our grand opening event back in March but due to the global pandemic, we were force to close our doors and cancel the event.

Now, for the past two months, they’ve been ready and waiting to find a loving home. So, I’m calling to the people of Milton Keynes to come and adopt a Spider Plant baby on the 30th of May, between midday and 3pm. "

The adoption drive-thru will be a safe and socially distanced event, promises the centre, which has named all the baby plants.

"This event is being launched to provide our community with a short trip out and a new hobby to support their mental health. At the time of writing, the UK lockdown is still in place so full discretion is advised," said the spokesman.

"We ask that you do not touch the table or the plants and instead politely ask one of our orderlies to deliver your choice to your car. They will be safely dressed in masks and gloves to reduce any potential transfer of infection. Our professional Spider Plant doctors will be on-site to answer any pressing questions you might have and you’ll be able to meet the whole team (from a safe distance) if you time it right."
