Now First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford has warned the current level of fines will increase if police data shows the current system is not effective enough.

He said police forces are putting evidence together for the Welsh Government and he will receive a report from the four forces about the number of people driving from England to Wales.

"If we find that there has been an increase in people coming across our border, doing it recklessly, then that conversation about the level of fines with our chief constables and police and crime commissioners will continue at the start of this week."

He added: "If they're [fines] not being effective, and the way to make them effective is to raise the level, then that's what we will do."

Fines in Wales start at £60 and increase to £120 for a second offence.

Three cars carrying 11 people were stopped by police at the Welsh border this weekend. Two people who flouted lockdown rules to make a trip to Wales to walk their dog were also allegedly caught with cannabis.
