Bella Gunes decided to build a fairy house in the middle of a field while walking with her mum Wendy during the first days of lockdown.

The pair returned to the same Bancroft field each day and the project grew and grew until there was an entire fairy village.

Bella called the village Sunnytopia and, with remarkable detail, added street names, more houses, two inns, a gym, a post office, a library, a sweet shop and even fruit juice bar.

The latest addition is a special Flora Night-angel hospital where the fairies can go if they get sick.

Soon the word spread and parents brought their children to see the creation and write messages of support on leaves or leave painted rocks for the fairies.

"We have families visiting our fairy village daily and telling us they are inspired by our efforts. Sometimes they have to form a queue to see it!," said Wendy, who lives at New Bradwell.

"Learning disability supporters bring their learners and some elderly people visit daily just to get out and see us. Families from surroundings areas are sending messages to me of thanks for the inspiration as they too are now building fairy gardens on there own gardens," she said.

Wendy has made a special Facebook page called Fairy Village and posts photos of the latest additions.

Bella, a Brownie, has received an Imagination Challenge badge for her efforts.

Meanwhile, word of her fairy village has spread as far as America, and she has become penpal to a young fairy fan in Arizona.

"We've enjoyed making the village so much and it’s amazing how much community support we have," said Wendy.

She and Bella started off spending half an hour each day on the project. But now lockdown outdoor and exercise restrictions are lifted, they happily spend three or four hours at a time making new items for the village.

"It's been a wonderful lockdown project for Bella, whose imagination has no end," said Wendy. "She has loved every minute of it and hopefully will remember lockdown as something special rather than something bad."

The fairy village is about ten minutes walk away from the concrete cows and can be reached from nearby redways.
