Three Milton Keynes pubs to cut price of food and drink to support Tax Equality Day
Three local pubs are showing their support for Tax Equality Day by cutting the price of all food and drink.
The Wetherspoon trio will chop all prices by 7.5 per cent for one day only on Thursday September 17, meaning the price of a meal and a drink will be reduced from £10 to £9.25.
The pubs are Moon Under Water in Xscape, Wetherspoons in Midsummer Boulevard, Bouverie Square, and Captain Ridley’s Shooting Party in Bletchley’s Queensway.
Tax Equality Day is aimed at highlighting the benefit of a VAT reduction in the hospitality industry. At present all food and drink in pubs is subject to 20 per cent VAT, compared to supermarkets which benefit from a zero VAT rate on all food.

As a result, supermarkets are able to use that saving to sell alcohol at a discounted price.
Wetherspoons manager, Chris Llewellyn, said: “We are proud to support the campaign to reduce the level of VAT within the hospitality industry.
“Customers coming to the pub on Thursday 17 September will find the price of their food and drink is lower than normal… We are keen to highlight the amount customers could save if VAT in pubs was lowered permanentlyA reduction in the level of VAT on a long-term basis will generate growth and create jobs in the important hospitality sector and help the high street, of which pubs are an intergral part.”
Industry leaders use Tax Equality day to pressure the government into a permanent hospitality VAT reduction to help high street venues survive and grow.
