Malcolm’s island essentials

WHAT do you get when you bring together five saxophonists? A very Saxy time indeed, of course, which is surely reason enough to snap up a ticket for Sax Appeal, who are live at The Stables tomorrow night.

Driving swing, haunting ballads and danceable latin and funk will spill, engaging with a funky rhythm section and some hard swinging arrangements to give you a very nice night out.

The Sunday Times checked their live front and then proclaimed them to be ‘Princes of the horn in thunderous form.’

On Saturday evening, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, with former Drifters fellas Patrick Alan and Rohan Delano will dig into the veritable feast of Motown classics to give you a set list to dance for: Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone, Reach Out I’ll Be There and naturally Signed Sealed Delivered will figure.

Celebrate ridiculously cool music made by artists including The Supremes, The Temptations and The Four Seasons with mo-vellous Motown.

Soul diva Kele le Roc will add her voice to the affair too – some of you will remember her for a couple of Top 10 tracks at the tail end of the nineties, or maybe that collaboration with Basement Jaxx that harvested the club anthem, Romeo.

Join the double Mobo winner and her soul-sational mates from 8pm.

Tickets are £23.

John Dankworth was an insanely clever man, and one whose love for music couldn’t be curtailed.

To that end, he even set up the regular Sunday morning sessions, Jazz Matters.

At the inaugural meeting of 2013, double bass player Malcolm Crease will be explaining his choices of Desert Island Discs.

Malcolm spent the whole of the 90s working as John Dankworth and wife Cleo Laine’s bassist, and he is also one third of the celebrated Acoustic Triangle music makers.

But if Malcolm was on a desert island with only 10 tunes for company, which would he opt for?

This is the event that will give you all the answers.

Sunday’s session begins at 11.30am, and rolls to 2pm.

Tickets are a gift too, at just £6.

Call to make a booking on MK 280800.
