The good tidings are starting early for a city author as she celebrates four weeks at the top of The Sunday Times bestseller list.
Queen of romantic comedy fiction Carole Matthews has penned twenty-three hugely successful novels and her latest seasonal page-turner, ‘Calling Mrs Christmas’, has spent three weeks at number seven in the chart listing.
Carole lives with her partner, Lovely Kev, in Tattenhoe and releases two books a year – one in time for some summer fun and one as a Christmassy treat.
She said: “Many of my books are set in and around Milton Keynes and I think my readers like it that they can relate to local areas.
“With this one I’ve gone very exotic with chapters set in Hemel Hempstead and Swedish Lapland!
“It’s so lovely to still be at the top of the charts after a career of nearly seventeen years as an author and, thankfully, my Christmassy novels are proving to be very popular.”
‘Calling Mrs Christmas’ follows Cassie Smith, age thirty-five, of Hemel Hempstead, who has been out of work for a while after being made redundant from her job as a ‘dedicated and diligent dogsbody’ (secretary) for a small engineering company.
A fruitless hunt for work, dwindling finances in the run-up to Christmas and a desire to feel useful inspire Cassie to use her love of all things Christmas to earn some money.
She begins charging for small festive tasks – wrapping presents, writing cards, tree decorating – and her business, Calling Mrs Christmas, is born.
Cassie is delighted with how popular her venture is but soon the lavish requests of multimillionaire client Carter Randall start monopolising all of her time.
Fortunately, she can rely on her lovely partner, kind-hearted Jim, to help with the rest of her clients.
Buoyed by her success, Cassie finds herself increasingly drawn towards Carter as she works to create the perfect Christmas for his adorable children.
Suddenly, Cassie finds herself facing a heartbreaking choice that could change her life this Christmas and for years to come.
Carole’s next book ‘A Place to Call Home’ will be published in January.
