One playground is based on Dr Suess’ book ‘The Lorax’

Two new play parks in Milton Keynes, including one based on a book by children’s author Dr Suess, are among improvements to facilities in Shenley Church End.

Milton Keynes Council’s landscaping team have recently completed building a new play area in Holy Thorn Lane with swings, a roundabout, children’s seesaw, and slide.

Work has now also started on a play area based on Dr Suess’ book ‘The Lorax’, in Pigott Drive.

Children will be able to play in a brightly coloured area that features cartoon-style trees that resemble those from the popular 1971 children’s novel by the famous American author. There are also plans to install a large climbing frame, slide, swings, trampoline, zip wire and The Lorax’s house.

The City Council will be installing fitness equipment, a basketball hoop and markings and making other public realm improvements such as benches, path resurfacing and landscape work to create a real community hub. It is set to be complete in early 2023.

Councillor Zoe Nolan, Labour Ward Councillor for Loughton & Shenley, said: “Play areas are a key part of children’s lives and it’s great to see that there are major improvements being made in Shenley Church End.

"We have worked with the community to understand the best approach to improve the play areas in the estate, and we’re pleased to see it all coming to fruition. We recently attended the newly opened play park on Holy Thorn Lane and look forward to seeing the exciting plans for The Lorax come to life.”

Councillor Shanika Mahendran, Labour Ward Councillor for Loughton & Shenley, added: “The new play parks are just what the doctor ordered. It’s great the city council continues to invest in these sorts of facilities that will allow generations of children who will grow up in the area to play and create memories, as well as providing other important community spaces for people to come together. I’m so pleased the work has started and can’t wait to see it finished.”
