Sound of a hit musical

Doe, a deer, a female deer, ray, a drop of golden sun, me a name I call myself... Ooh, we do so love The Sound of Music!

We can also recite large portions of it without prompting, so if any cast member feels a little under the weather this coming week, feel free to give us a call.

Yep, the time is nigh for one of the most popular musicals of all time to sing its way back to MK. From Tuesday the story of the Von Trapp Family begins its two week stay with us.

What makes this piece all the more endearing of course, is that it’s based on a true story.

When novice Nun Maria is sent to be governess to the Von Trapp children she is met with the disdain of the siblings who have endured – and driven away – a succession of governesses.

But Maria isn’t about to go so quietly. She wins the children over, and eventually wins the heart of their father, the Captain too.

But happiness never did run smooth – least of all when war is approaching and the Nazi party is on the rise.

The family’s home in Austria is on the brink of being swallowed up by the Third Reich.

But The Von Trapp Family do eventually make a remarkable escape to freedom, of course.

It’s a wonderful story, and on stage comes with one of our all-time favourite scores; the sing-a-long classics My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi, the party exiting So Long, Farewell and the beautifully stark Edelweiss are glorious, each and every one.

Not to mention the title song, and the ‘freedom’ favourer Climb Ev’ry Mountain.

Doing justice to the script this time around is Danielle Hope, winner of BBCs Over the Rainbow talent show, who takes on the role of the brilliantly feisty, good-hearted, Maria.

Stephen Houghton returns to our stage as Captain Von Trapp.

It’ll be emotional!
