YOUNG people under the age of 19 are to be treated like pensioners – at least as far as bus fares are concerned.

Labour councillors have negotiated a better deal for the teenagers, who currently pay full fare. From next month they will pay just 35p maximum per ride, no matter where they travel in the city.

The concession will cost £283,000, said Labour’s Cllr Steve Coventry, who fought for the deal at 2.30am during the council’s budget setting meeting.

“For many years we have been clear that this is a much needed service improvement and a real benefit,” he said.
