A man who is so scared of heights that he cannot climb a stepladder is diving out of a plane from 13,000 feet to raise cash for charity.

Kevin Lane is determined to overcome his phobia in honour of his friend who died of a brain tumour earlier this year.

“My friend was only 38. After his death I was shocked to find out that brain tumours are the most common cause of cancerous deaths in people aged under 45,” he said.

A home carer, Kevin has also seen two of his clients die from brain tumours over the past year.

“I want to raise money specifically for research into brain tumours. I wanted to chose something that would be a real challenge so more people would sponsor me,” he said.

“I’ve no idea how I will do it. All I know is that I cannot not do it.”

Kevin, who lives in Deanshanger, has booked the sky dive for September.

“I’m terrified already!” he said. “My fear of heights is so bad that I’ve never even climbed a ladder before.

“Once I won tickets for a ride in a hot air balloon. I did it but I spent the whole time crouched head down in the bottom of the basket, trembling and too scared to look over the side.”
