A total of 17 people have been arrested on suspicion of entering the UK illegally at Newport Pagnell services.

Police were called to the M1 at around 10.30am yesterday to reports of people jumping out the back of a lorry.

All 17 were taken into custody before being transferred to the UK Border Force, said police.

In September the Citizen revealed that asylum-seeking children found in lorries at the city service station had increased sixfold in the past year.

Last year alone six migrant children were found at the M1 services, without their parents, or another adult - taking the total number to 36 this year.

The youngsters have now been settled with foster families across Milton Keynes.
